Is the Obama administration doing well on immigration and not tooting its horn loudly enough (Buchanan) or is it making a show of deporting criminals while going utterly soft on other immigrants here illegally (Thomas)?
My vote? Advantage, Thomas.
Buchanan overlooks the record low number of deportation of non-criminal “illegal immigrants,” which Thomas notes and puts in larger context:
We have seen this political game played out over many years and with administrations of both parties. Big business, which mostly contributes to Republican political campaigns, wants cheap labor and so favors illegal immigrants. Democrats want the illegal immigrants because they see them as potential Democratic voters.
Former Indiana GOP Chair Rex Early used to say “that dog don’t hunt” to dismiss bogus arguments.
Both Buchanan and Thomas tie deportations to getting Americans employed again. Yesterday’s Nobel Prize for economics went to three people for breakthrough studies of why jobs remain unfilled even in hard times when many are unemployed.
Pat and Cal: deportations may not put Americans back to work. “That dog don’t hunt.”
